On the 23rd anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks, the families of the nearly 3,000 victims gathered at the 9/11 Memorial in New York. They expressed their grief and disappointment, feeling that no political action can ever make up for the immense loss they suffered.

The solemn commemoration, held in the heart of the financial district, was marked by the presence of numerous attendees carrying bouquets of flowers and wearing pins with photos of their loved ones, adorned with small blue ribbons in solidarity with the victims.

Despite the passage of time, the pain and memory of that fateful day remain alive in the hearts of those present.

Lisa Mendez, wearing a t-shirt with a picture of her cousin, Edward Calderón, who died in the attack, shared her feelings with EFE: “No matter what happens, (the victims) still feel betrayed, and nothing will change that. It’s good that those responsible are in prison, but we’re talking about a great tragedy and a great loss, and that can never be fixed.”

Rosa Paris, who lost her only son in the 9/11 attacks, told the media that the suffering and absence of her loved one can never be compensated.

Ram Saren, whose heart still bears the scars of that tragic day, was also emotional as he recalled, “that day is engraved in my heart.”

However, some attendees found a way to find peace and forgiveness, like Karol Trinidad, who, despite losing her brother Michael in the Twin Towers tragedy, said she felt “at peace with everyone.”

With a melancholic smile, Trinidad explained: “I don’t blame anyone. Everyone has their own mindset. I just know that (the deceased) are in a better place than we are.”

A Commemoration Amid a Delicate Political Climate

This year’s anniversary comes amid a politically charged atmosphere, just two months before the U.S. presidential elections.

Candidates Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, both present at the official commemoration, had engaged in a heated debate the previous night, adding a political tone to the solemnity of the day.

Elvin García, an Ecuadorian firefighter who participated in the rescue operations following the September 11 attack, recalled the painful process of coming to terms with the fact that instead of rescuing lives, they were mostly recovering bodies.

García also urged the next president to focus on providing psychological and financial support to the affected families, noting that many of the deceased were the primary breadwinners for their households.

Karol Trinidad, meanwhile, called on the candidates to “keep their feet on the ground” and prioritize global peace.

“We need peace on this planet. We need to stop all these petty wars,” she said.

As is customary, the names of all those who lost their lives were read during the ceremony, and flowers and American flags were placed on the engraved names around the two large pools that now stand in the place of the former Twin Towers.

This annual ritual continues to serve as a powerful reminder of the lasting impact that tragic day has had on so many lives.
