Ramesh Vishwashkumar, a 48-year-old British citizen, is so far the only confirmed survivor of the tragic crash of Air India flight AI-171, which went down on Thursday in Ahmedabad with 242 people on board.
Viral images showed him walking injured, disoriented, and crying for help as he searched for his brother among the charred remains of the Boeing 787-8.
His survival story has moved India and the world, as authorities continue rescue and investigation efforts following the disaster that left over 200 dead.

Vishwashkumar was seated in 11A next to his brother, Ajay Kumar Ramesh, on their way back to London from the city of Diu.
“When I got up, there were bodies all around me. I was scared. I stood up and ran,” he told the Hindustan Times. He was still carrying his boarding pass when admitted to the hospital.
The British passenger, a London resident for the past two decades, asked for help locating his brother, who had been seated in a different row of the plane.
“I can’t find him. Please help me find him,” Ramesh Vishwashkumar said, visibly shaken, in a video widely circulated on social media.

Flight AI-171 took off at 13:38 from Ahmedabad airport bound for London-Gatwick but crashed just 1.6 kilometers later over a densely populated area of Meghaninagar.
The aircraft was carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew members, including Indian, British, Portuguese, and one Canadian national.
Videos captured Vishwashkumar emerging from the wreckage, staggering and with bloodstained clothes.
Scenes from the site showed total devastation: burning vehicles, collapsed structures, and covered bodies.
What’s Next
Air India confirmed it is cooperating with authorities and has deployed support teams for the victims’ families.
The airline’s CEO expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy.
Meanwhile, Ramesh Vishwashkumar remains under medical observation and may become a key witness to help reconstruct the final minutes before the crash.
