The death of ICU nurse Alex Pretti during a migration-related operation in Minneapolis continues to raise serious questions about the use of force by federal agents.

A preliminary report from the Department of Homeland Security, submitted to Congress, provides new details about the shooting that occurred last Saturday.

The document was reviewed and cited by CNN and CBS News, and represents the most complete official account so far.

At least two federal agents fired their weapons during the confrontation in which 37-year-old Alex Pretti was killed.

According to the report, U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents were struggling with Pretti when one of them shouted, “He’s got a gun!”

Approximately five seconds later, a Border Patrol agent fired his Glock 19.

Use of Weapons by Federal Agents

Almost simultaneously, a Customs and Border Protection agent fired his Glock 47.

Both weapons were standard-issue CBP firearms, according to the document cited by CNN.

The report does not specify whether bullets from both agents struck Pretti directly.

Alex Pretti was on the ground at the moment the shots were fired, according to the document.

The nurse was struck by close to a dozen point-blank gunshots on Saturday morning.

The shots occurred while he was attempting to defend a woman who had been pushed by a migration agent.

What the Videos Show

Muerte de Alex Pretti durante operativo migratorio, Alex Pretti DHS reportVideos recorded by witnesses captured part of the incident during the migration operation.

The footage shows that Pretti’s firearm was removed from his waistband while he was already on the ground.

This occurred before agents fired their weapons, as seen in several videos.

The recordings do not show Pretti holding the gun at any moment.

Nor do they show him attempting to draw it from his waistband during the struggle.

The DHS report states that after the shooting, an agent reported having possession of Pretti’s firearm.

The document does not indicate that the nurse aimed or threatened the agents.

Pretti legally possessed the firearm, according to the report.

The document submitted to Congress does not state that he attempted to use it.

DHS Report on the Death of Alex Pretti

Muerte de Alex Pretti durante operativo migratorioInitially, DHS stated that Pretti had approached agents with a semi-automatic weapon.

That version was distributed in an official statement released on Saturday.

However, the subsequent report does not support that initial claim.

The document also does not assert that Pretti tried to draw his weapon during the incident.

The report describes the moments leading up to the confrontation with federal agents.

Agents were conducting an operation when they were approached by two women blowing whistles.

An agent ordered the women to move away from the roadway.

It was at that point that agents first encountered Pretti.

The nurse was recording the operation with his cell phone.

Videos show that he attempted to help a woman who had been pushed by an agent.

The report is a preliminary review prepared by CBP’s Office of Professional Responsibility.

Pretti’s death has triggered a wave of outrage across the country.

It has also drawn scrutiny from Republican lawmakers.

The case remains under review as calls for full accountability continue to grow.
