Starting in 2024, Amazon will sell Hyundai automobiles in the United States, according to an agreement announced on November 16.
The deal will also involve the South Korean automaker integrating Amazon’s digital assistant, Alexa, into its vehicles.
Hyundai thus becomes the first car brand to sell new vehicles on Amazon, as reported by the Efe news agency.
The announcement was made at the Los Angeles Auto Show by José Muñoz, President of Hyundai North America, and Marty Mallick, Amazon’s Global Vice President of Corporate Development.
Hyundai to Be the First to Sell New Cars on Amazon
This agreement will allow the manufacturer’s dealers to sell their products on the global commerce giant’s platform, according to Efe.
Consumers choosing to purchase a Hyundai vehicle through Amazon will have the option to pick it up at the dealership or have it delivered to their doorstep.
Hyundai has selected AWS, Amazon’s unit dedicated to providing computing services, as its «preferred cloud provider» to «accelerate its digital transformation.»
The South Korean manufacturer stated in a press release that the AWS agreement will make it «a more data-focused organization with a technology strategy that prioritizes the cloud.»
Alexa Integration into Hyundai Cars
The third aspect of the agreement will be the integration of Amazon’s digital assistant, Alexa, into Hyundai vehicles starting in 2025.
The integration will allow vehicle occupants, through voice commands, to request Alexa to play music.
They will also be able to set reminders and control home appliances connected to the digital assistant.
It will be possible as well to obtain updated information on traffic or weather conditions, according to Efe.
Will Buying Cars Be Easier?
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy stated that the Hyundai agreement should make vehicle acquisition easier.
It will also streamline the use of Alexa in cars, as reported by the Efe news agency.
This will allow the South Korean manufacturer to «transform the customer experience.»
In response, Hyundai’s President and CEO, Jaehoon Chang, affirmed that the partnership with Amazon «opens incredible opportunities» for the automaker.
