The detentions were due to administrative infractions, according to municipal authorities.

Official reports state that his behavior consistently disturbed public order.

Police interventions took place at different locations in Chapala and Ajijic.

Authorities considered that the repeated offenses represented a risk to the public.

Each detention was recorded as part of local administrative procedures.

The recent history was decisive in reviewing his immigration status.

No home or family in Mexico

During his most recent detention, Wegryn provided relevant information to authorities.

He stated that he has no family in Mexican territory. He also said he does not have a fixed address.

He indicated that he was experiencing homelessness. Based on these statements, the Municipal Police notified other agencies.

The detainee’s personal situation prompted the intervention of the National Migration Institute.

The objective was to verify his legal status in the country. Municipal authorities requested the corresponding review.

Confirmation of irregular stay and repatriation

After the official review, the National Migration Institute confirmed his irregular immigration status.

The INM determined that the American citizen did not have documents allowing him to remain in Mexico.

Federal authorities identified that he was born in the state of California.

Based on this information, the corresponding protocols were activated.

On January 7, James Mitchell Wegryn was placed at the disposal of the INM.

The handover was carried out to begin the administrative repatriation process.

The procedure was placed under the responsibility of the federal migration authority.

Municipal authorities stated that the handover was carried out in accordance with the law.

The case was closed at the local level after the formal transfer to the INM in Guadalajara.

The federal authority will continue with the corresponding process in accordance with current regulations.
