- AMLO sons seek judicial protection and file amparo
- Case linked to fiscal fuel smuggling
- Amparo shields them from arrest
According to EFE, Andrés Manuel López Beltrán, known as “Andy,” and his brother Gonzalo López Beltrán, sons of former Mexican president Andrés Manuel López Obrador, filed an amparo petition to shield themselves from any potential arrest warrants.
The legal resource seeks to protect them against possible detentions linked to an investigation into fuel smuggling, journalist Claudio Ochoa Huerta reported.
Through this amparo, the López Beltrán brothers obtained special protection against arbitrary detention, incommunicado custody, threats to life, forced disappearance, or any judicial order against them.
The protection was granted after the filing of an electronically submitted amparo petition by a citizen identified as Francisco Javier Rodríguez Smith Macdonald.

The petition was filed before a district court in Zacatecas and listed the Hotel Círculo Mexicano in Mexico City’s historic center as the official notification address.
Judicial file 2098/2025 also names other figures allegedly tied to the fuel smuggling network, known in Mexico as “huachicol fiscal.”
Among those mentioned are Rear Admiral Fernando Farías Laguna, as well as businessman Roberto Blanco Cantú, nicknamed “El señor de los buques.”
The list also includes Roberto Brown, alleged owner of the company Mefra Fleteso, and Diana Heleyn Foullon Gómez, identified by the alias “Lady D.”

According to the accusations, all of them are allegedly part of a scheme to evade taxes through the import and sale of fuels under fraudulent arrangements.
Of everyone linked in the amparo request, only the former president’s sons do not currently face an active arrest warrant.
The judge reviewing the lawsuit granted an “immediate suspension”, an immediate-effect measure requiring authorities to release the López Beltrán brothers if they were irregularly detained.
The suspension also instructs authorities to guarantee the applicants’ physical and psychological safety, as well as their prompt location in the event of a forced-disappearance report.

>>>>>>>>>>>>Last week, the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) confirmed that a group of senior naval commanders and customs officials were bound over for trial for their alleged participation in illegal fuel-smuggling operations.
Among those implicated is Vice Admiral Manuel Roberto Farías Laguna, accused of allowing millions of liters of fuel to enter Mexico under the classification of additives.
According to the FGR, this scheme enabled illicit fuel sales inside the country and allowed the network to evade millions in taxes.
The case is part of ongoing investigations into “huachicol fiscal,” a term used in Mexico for fuel theft or smuggling disguised as legal operations.
AMLO Sons Amparo Triggers Controversy

In a recent column, Claudio Ochoa Huerta suggested that the López Beltrán brothers may have had a role in shielding the network under investigation.
Both Andy and Gonzalo López Beltrán have publicly rejected those claims and deny any link to illicit activities.
The inclusion of their names in the amparo request, however, intensified political and media debate over possible ties between the former president’s family and corruption networks.
Opponents have seized on the case to question AMLO’s legacy and criticize what they consider an attempt at preemptive legal shielding.
Political Debate and Judicial Questions
By contrast, the brothers’ defenders argue that the amparo is a preventive measure to avoid abuses or arbitrary detentions amid a moment of intense media exposure.
The court file has also put the role of judges and tribunals under the microscope regarding immediate suspensions that, in practice, can slow ongoing investigations.
Analysts point out that while an amparo does not imply innocence, it does establish a procedural safeguard that may complicate the prosecutor’s actions.
The investigation into fiscal huachicol continues and has already implicated naval officers, customs officials, and businesspeople with interests in fuel import and sales.
Judicial Future of the López Beltrán Brothers
The scandal continues to generate tensions in Mexican politics, as it involves high-profile figures and brings the issue of fuel smuggling back to the center of public debate.
Meanwhile, the López Beltrán brothers’ judicial future will depend on judicial rulings and on the FGR’s progress in building solid evidence.
The case also looms as a political flashpoint that could shape the early years following López Obrador’s presidency.
Public opinion remains divided between those who see political persecution and those who view the amparo as a sign of fear of potential legal liability.
