According to PEOPLE, Miro told him her girlfriend had broken up with her and that her aunt wanted her to move out of the home.
Later that evening, the cousin and Ana Nieves went to a party but returned separately in the early morning hours.
The next day, the cousin tried unsuccessfully to contact Nieves, raising concern among relatives.

Family friends went to the apartment looking for Nieves, but Kristie Miro insisted she was not home.
Later, a neighbor requested a welfare check due to the lack of contact with Nieves.

The victim was still wearing the bloodied clothes she had worn to the party the night before.

“Losing a loved one to violence is incredibly painful and unimaginable, especially at the hands of another family member,” said District Attorney Bragg.
Her sister, Lucy Nieves, told PEOPLE: “I am completely stunned and hurting. Today I went to church and cried because I don’t understand why her. She would give you her last breath.”
Through tears, Lucy added: “What’s the worst part? It’s family. How do you swallow that pill?”
