The second edition of Billboard’s Latin Women in Music took place this Saturday in Miami without the presence of the main awardee, Karol G.

The event, aimed at celebrating women who have made a significant impact on Latin music, was overshadowed by criticism directed at one of its honorees, Ángela Aguilar.

The young singer, who received the ‘Musical Dynasty’ award, was subjected to a flood of negative comments on social media.

Her representation of Mexican culture and her personal life were questioned.

From the official Instagram account of the event, the award to Ángela Aguilar was announced with the message: «Ángela Aguilar is a worthy representative of her dynasty and an excellent representative of women in her genre and the industry.»

This announcement generated hundreds of criticisms on social media, attacking both her roots and her previous comments.

Some of the harshest comments included: «She does not represent me as a woman» and «She is neither Mexican nor does she represent us.»

There were also followers who were more severe: «Mexicans, this girl is not Mexican, stop saying she is Mexican, she is just taking advantage of Mexican culture, to which she does NOT belong.»

Karma, Because of Nodal?

The criticisms were not limited to her musical career.

Some comments focused on the recent controversy after Mexican singer Cristian Nodal’s breakup with Cazzu and rumors of a relationship with Ángela Aguilar.

Comments such as: «Now recognized for being a homewrecker,» and «a woman who destroys a family does not represent me in any way, greetings,» showed users’ discontent with Pepe Aguilar’s daughter.

«Cazzu is a worthy woman! EVERYONE speaks very highly of her and how she promotes being a great woman, a true feminist,» another follower added.

Is Ángela Aguilar Hiding from People?

Despite the criticisms, Ángela Aguilar attended the gala, although she did not walk the pink carpet.

Aguilar preferred to go directly to the main event, according to Efe.

Similar to Camila Cabello and Kali Uchis, who were recognized with the ‘Global Impact’ and ‘Rising Star’ awards, respectively.

During the gala, a video posted on the Telemundo account showing Ángela Aguilar’s dress also received numerous criticisms.

The big absentee of the night was Karol G, who was honored with the ‘Woman of the Year’ award.
