  • Audio of Debanhi Escobar leaked
  • Calls for justice in Mexico
  • Case reignites public outrage

According to Heraldo de México, the case of Debanhi Escobar, the 18-year-old murdered in April 2022 in Nuevo León, continues to shake Mexico.

Two years later, a new leaked audio has reignited public outrage and renewed calls for justice in one of the country’s most widely covered femicide cases.

The recording, circulated on social media, is believed to be the last message Debanhi sent before her death. In it, she warns a friend that the situation at the party she had attended with her friends “was getting ugly” and that there were “some sick guys” trying to take advantage of the women.

Her words—recorded minutes before she disappeared—now take on new meaning, echoing as a plea ignored in a hostile environment that ended in tragedy.

“I don’t want to scare you or anything, but I’m telling you what’s happening… this is turning into a mess with some sick guys who want to take it out on the girls,” Debanhi Escobar can be heard saying in the audio, whose authenticity has not been denied by authorities.

The friend who received the message said he barely knew her and that they usually chatted at night while he played video games. “I felt terrible, and my family did too… we were the same age,” he told local outlets.

The content of the audio matches the moment security cameras captured Debanhi attempting to leave the party, where she was attacked by a man who prevented her from escaping.

Hours later, she vanished, sparking an intense search in the municipality of Escobedo.

Inconsistencies Mark the Debanhi Escobar Case

Debanhi’s body was found nearly 15 days after her disappearance inside a cistern at a motel—an area that authorities had already inspected multiple times.

From the outset, the case was riddled with contradictions and alleged irregularities.

Nuevo León authorities initially stated that the young woman died from a “deep cranial contusion,” while Mexico City’s Prosecutor’s Office concluded that she died of asphyxiation—contradicting the original version of an accidental fall.

These discrepancies fueled anger from the Escobar Bazaldúa family, who have since accused authorities of a cover-up, negligence, and a flawed investigation.

The recent release of the HBO documentary “Debanhi: ¿Quién mató a nuestra hija?” has brought the case back into public discussion.

The four-part docuseries exposes the inconsistencies in the investigation, the omissions by authorities, and the tireless efforts of Debanhi’s parents to uncover the truth.

It also portrays the bureaucratic hurdles they faced, the emotional toll of the process, and the widespread citizen support for their pursuit of justice.

The documentary’s premiere has prompted thousands of users on social media to revisit the case, sharing and discussing the leaked Debanhi Escobar audio while demanding a new review of the evidence.

Debanhi’s Parents Continue Demanding Justice

Debanhi Escobar’s femicide not only shocked Mexico because of the brutality of her death but also for what it represents—the vulnerability of women in a system that too often revictimizes them.

Two years after the crime, the case remains unresolved, and no one has been held accountable.

Her parents continue their fight, joining marches and forums where they repeat the same demand: justice, truth, and dignity for their daughter.

The echo of Debanhi’s voice, now spread across social networks, once again highlights the urgent need for real change in how Mexican authorities investigate femicides.
