A former Miss Indiana Latina, Glenis Zapata is mired in a scandal involving money laundering and cocaine trafficking.

The U.S. Department of Justice formally charged the beauty queen with helping Mexican traffickers move drugs and cash in Chicago.

She is a 34-year-old model of Colombian origin.

Glenis Zapata is arrested in Chicago

Zapata allegedly used her job as a stewardess on a commercial airline to carry $310,000 from the Windy City to the southwest U.S. and on to Mexico.

This occurred in mid-May, minutes after she dropped her son off at school.

Her lawyer, Michael John Petro, indicated that she was facing federal charges.

She transported about $170,000 on August 7, 2019, according to the New York Post.

Glenis Zapata laundered money for Mexican cartels

Zapata allegedly repeated the operation on September 10 of the same year, but with $140,000, making it a total of $310,000. Apparently this was all cash.

Detectives allege this money came from illegal activities.

She was supposedly working for a Mexican cartel led by Oswaldo ‘Gordo’ Espinosa.

Eighteen other people are allegedly involved in both the distribution of drugs and the transporting cash.

Her sister is also implicated

Glenis Zapata’s sister, Ilenis Zapata, and a friend of theirs, Georgina Bañuelos, 39, were also involved.

The Federal Prosecutor’s Office, Northern District of Illinois reported that Bañuelos and Ilenis were changing low denomination bills for higher ones.

Apparently the money came selling drugs on the streets of Chicago.

Ilenis Zapata took advantage of her position as a bank employee in Indiana.

The transactions all took place in 2019

These transactions occurred in 2019 and amount to a total of $150,000.

The former beauty queen and her sister both posted bail $20,000 each.

They are now awaiting trial.
