Lent comprises the liturgical period of the Christian calendar preceding the celebration of Easter.
It lasts approximately 40 days and begins on Ash Wednesday, marking the start of a time for reflection, penance and spiritual preparation.
Part of this tradition includes a drink called Bishop’s Water, and it’s irresistible.

Bishop’s Water is a traditional beverage

According to National Geographic, Bishop’s Water is also known as Lenten Water.
Some also call it the Blood of Christ or Tears of the Virgin.
It’s said that monks created this drink from the vegetables and fruits they cultivated themselves at their seminaries.
It wasn’t until the 16th century that it began to be regularly prepared and consumed in the city of Zacatecas, Mexico.
A tradition that endures to this day

Moreover, to this day, in some places in Mexico an altar for Our Lady of Sorrows is set up.
In addition to an image of the Virgin, a crucifix is placed there along with a table set with candles and clay figures.
Traditionally, the owner of the house was asked if the Virgin had cried.
If they said yes, everyone would come in to pray and the host would offer Bishop’s Water at the end of the celebration.
Bishop’s Water comes from Zacatecas

National Geographic shared that during Lent, it’s customary to drink Bishop’s Water in places like Zacatecas.
It’s worth noting that it’s not only a beverage, many people also prepare it like a salad.
It is made with beetroot, apple, orange, lettuce, banana and peanuts. It’s flavor will captivate you.

How to make Bishop’s Water for Lent

To prepare Bishop’s Water for Lent, you’ll need two medium-sized beetroots and a quarter of a head of lettuce, thinly sliced.
You’ll also need two oranges cut into segments, two apples, two bananas, 10 grams of shelled peanuts, ice and sweetener to taste.
First, finely grate one beetroot and extract the juice from the other, then chop the other fruits into small cubes.
Combine all the ingredients in a pitcher; finally, add the bananas. Mix with water and sweeten as desired.
