  • The president makes an unexpected announcement.
  • He will no longer seek re-election.
  • Thanks Kamala Harris.

President Joe Biden decided this Sunday to abandon the re-election race, in the interest of his party and the country, he reported in a letter.

«It has been the greatest honor of my life to be your President,» Biden began his statement.

«And although my intention has been to seek re-election, I believe that the best thing for my party and for the country is for me to retire,» added the president.

«And I focused solely on fulfilling my duties as president for the rest of my term,» said the 81-year-old president.

BIDEN ABANDONS THE PRESIDENTIAL RACE

Biden has thus given in to pressure from his own party after his mediocre performance in the first debate of the race for the White House against Donald Trump.

Dozens of legislators and senators had asked him in recent days to abandon the witness due to his advanced age.

The president, who is isolated at his home in Delaware recovering from Covid, explained that in the coming days he will address the nation to explain his decision.

«For now, let me express my deepest gratitude to all those who have worked so hard to see me re-elected.»

«I want to thank Vice President Kamala Harris for being an extraordinary partner in all of this work.»

«And let me express my sincere gratitude to the American people for the faith and trust they have placed in me,» Biden said.

In the text, however, he does not give his explicit support for the vice president as his replacement for the elections on November 5.

«Let me express my sincere gratitude to the American people for the faith and trust they have placed in me,» Biden said.

The president noted that in the last three and a half years «great progress has been made as a nation.»

«I know that none of this could have been done without you, the American people».

«Together, we overcame a once-in-a-century pandemic and the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression».

«We have protected and preserved our democracy. And we have revitalized and strengthened our alliances around the world,” he said.
