Charlotte is emerging as the next target of an immigration-control operation led by the Border Patrol, according to a report from NBC News.
Although the exact date has not been revealed, the deployment would take place after Commander Greg Bovino leaves Chicago, the city where he has directed since September the immigration crackdown promoted by President Donald Trump under the name “Operation Midway Blitz.”

According to NBC News, the operation in Charlotte would mark a significant shift: it would be the first city where the Border Patrol applies immigration laws without coordination with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), despite the fact that ICE has previously made arrests in the area.
The key difference is that both agencies had not worked jointly in that locality.
A Department of Homeland Security (DHS) official told the outlet that Bovino could leave Chicago as early as this week.
His departure would pave the way for the next operational move, although DHS has avoided publicly confirming details.

DHS press secretary Tricia McLaughlin told NBC News that the agency would not withdraw from Chicago and defended the operation’s performance, citing crime-related statistics.
Asked by WCNC Charlotte about the new operation, McLaughlin reiterated the federal government’s official position with this statement:
“The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) works daily to enforce national laws across the country. We do not comment on future or potential operations.”
Local Response to the Possible Deployment
The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office initially reported that it had not received any contact from the Border Patrol regarding a future operation in the region.
However, on Thursday, it issued an updated statement to WCNC Charlotte indicating that on Wednesday, November 12, Sheriff Garry L. McFadden was contacted by two different federal officials.
Both confirmed that personnel from Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will arrive in the Charlotte area as soon as this Saturday or early the following week.
The sheriff’s office said that, so far, no specific details about the federal operation have been disclosed, and no request has been made for MCSO to participate in law-enforcement actions.
The agency emphasized that it will continue focusing on community needs, as usual, and that it will not collaborate with ICE or CBP on immigration-enforcement measures.
In the statement sent to the outlet, Sheriff McFadden said:
“We value and appreciate the renewed collaboration and open communication with our federal partners. This allows us to stay informed and be proactive to keep Mecklenburg County safe and maintain the level of trust our community deserves.”
Why the Federal Operation in Charlotte Matters
The potential operation in Charlotte comes amid a national climate marked by increasingly aggressive immigration measures and inconsistent coordination among federal agencies.
Implementing a Border Patrol-led deployment without direct ICE participation represents a shift in traditional operational patterns and raises questions about the scope and local implications of this strategy.
The confirmation of contact between federal authorities and the Mecklenburg County sheriff shows that preparations are already underway, despite the lack of official public information.
For immigrant communities, local organizations, and city officials, this period of uncertainty could signal days of heightened vigilance and concern as the true dimensions of the operation begin to take shape.
