The police reported that the young woman suffered serious burns on multiple parts of her body and remains hospitalized in critical condition.
As of the morning of November 18, authorities had not detained any suspects connected to the attack.
The Chicago Police Department stated that the investigation remains active as officers work to gather more information on the assailant.
Authorities did not release additional details about the type of liquid used or the possible motive behind the verbal dispute that led to the attack.
According to the police statement, the incident happened suddenly during the confrontation, which turned violent in a matter of seconds.
Responding officers found the scene with no active flames, but with the victim gravely injured inside the train.
What Comes Next in the Investigation
Police continue gathering testimony from potential witnesses who were on the train or at the Clark and Lake station during the incident.
Authorities are also reviewing CTA security camera footage in an effort to identify the man who fled immediately after igniting the woman.
The Chicago Police Department reiterated that anyone with relevant information can contact the tip line to support the investigation.
For now, it has not been revealed whether there was any prior relationship between the victim and the attacker.
Police continue to keep the investigation open as they work to reconstruct the events before and after the assault—considered by authorities to be an extremely violent act.
The CTA did not issue additional comments in the information released by police.
Authorities say the priority is locating the suspect and determining whether he will face attempted homicide charges once identified in the Chicago train burning attack.
