The sisters were residents of Dallas and had just graduated from the second grade at University Park School.

The girls were swept away by the rising waters of the Guadalupe River after a storm battered the region.

Causing more than a hundred fatalities, including several children.

So noted the news outlet Milenio.

“They Will Never Be Forgotten”

David Lawrence, former editor of the Miami Herald and founder of the Children’s Movement of Florida (CMF), expressed his grief in a heartfelt message:

“This is an unimaginable moment for our family. They will never be forgotten.”

The organization he leads also released a statement asking the community to pray for the victims:

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of so many precious children, including two granddaughters of our founder.”

The parents of the twins, John and Lacy Lawrence, also shared their sorrow in a public message: “Hanna and Rebecca brought us so much joy. We are devastated that the bond they shared is now frozen in time.”

Innocent Victims Amid the Disaster

Local authorities reported that, besides the Lawrence twins, other victims were identified in the camp tragedy.

Among them was Mary Grace Baker, also 8 years old, a student at St. Anne Catholic School in Beaumont. Her school urged the community to display pink ribbons in her memory.

The camp director, Dick Eastland, died while trying to save the girls.

According to his grandson, George Eastland, “If he wasn’t going to die of natural causes, this was the only other way: saving the girls he loved so much.”

Unprecedented Tragedy in Texas

The floods in Texas have been described as “historic” by authorities due to the intensity of the rains that caused the Guadalupe River to overflow.

Search and rescue operations continue, as several children remain missing, including the children of Reece and Paula Zunker, both educators who also perished.

Another confirmed victim was Chloe Childress, a young camp counselor only 19 years old.

The tragedy has shocked the country and left a deep wound in the educational and journalistic communities, marked by the pain of an unexpected and irreparable loss.
