The United States announces deportation flights to Venezuela in the next 30 days

Deportation flights to Venezuela will begin “within the next 30 days,” confirmed Tomas Homas, the border czar, in statements to The New York Times.

This announcement marks a change in bilateral relations between the two countries, which for the past six years have not had large-scale deportation agreements.

Venezuela, considered an adversary by the United States, stopped receiving deportation flights when the government of Nicolás Maduro broke diplomatic relations with Washington during Donald Trump’s administration.

To date, the Venezuelan government has not confirmed whether it will accept its repatriated citizens.

Maduro Responds to Airplane Seizure and US-Venezuela Deportation Agreements

Maduro has only reacted to the recent seizure of an airplane in the Dominican Republic, calling it a “blatant robbery” in a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Venezuelan government also accused Secretary of State Marco Rubio of being an “airplane thief.”

The reactivation of deportation flights comes after a meeting between Trump’s special envoy, Richard Grenell, and Nicolás Maduro.

According to Trump, Venezuela agreed in that meeting to receive deported citizens, including alleged members of the criminal organization Tren de Aragua.

The agreement also stipulates that the Venezuelan government will provide transportation for the return of these immigrants.

This decision is part of the immigration measures that Trump has toughened in recent weeks.

In addition to deportation flights, his administration has announced the end of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Venezuelans.

This benefit, granted to nearly 350,000 people, will expire on April 7, 2025, leaving thousands without legal status unless they qualify for another immigration process.

During his first term, Trump did not recognize Nicolás Maduro, but now he needs him to execute his policy of mass deportations.
