A World Cup that promises to be historic.

The 2026 tournament will be special for several reasons: it will be the first time with 48 teams and the first hosted across three nations:

United States, Mexico, and Canada.

The competition will run from June 11 to July 19, with Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca hosting the opening match.

2026 World Cup: Teams Already Qualified

FIFA distributed the qualification spots among confederations as follows:

  • 16 for Europe (UEFA)
  • 9 for Africa (CAF)
  • 8 for Asia (AFC)
  • 6 for South America (CONMEBOL)
  • 6 for Concacaf (CONCACAF)
  • 1 for Oceania (OFC)

Plus additional intercontinental playoff slots.

With one year to go, several teams have already secured their places—hosts, historic powerhouses, and debutants preparing to make history at the next World Cup.

The Hosts and First Qualifiers

As hosts, the United States, Mexico, and Canada qualified automatically. For Mexico, it will be their 18th World Cup; for the U.S., their 12th; and for Canada, their third, after appearances in 1986 and 2022.

From Asia, Japan was the first to qualify, securing its eighth consecutive appearance.

Soon after, New Zealand became Oceania’s representative, qualifying for their third World Cup. Iran also clinched a spot, marking its seventh overall and fourth in a row.

In South America, Argentina was the first to qualify, topping the table comfortably. The defending champions will appear in their 19th World Cup.

Debutants and Established Powers

One of the biggest surprises heading into 2026 is Uzbekistan, which qualified for its first-ever World Cup after drawing with the United Arab Emirates.

Alongside them, South Korea extended its run to 12 consecutive appearances, while Jordan celebrated a historic debut after results in its group favored qualification.

Australia also booked its seventh World Cup appearance. Brazil, despite ups and downs in qualifying, preserved its perfect record—it remains the only team to have played in every edition of the tournament.

From South America, Ecuador, Uruguay, Colombia, and Paraguay also confirmed their places. Uruguay qualified with a commanding win over Peru, Ecuador with victory against Bolivia, and Paraguay after drawing with Ecuador.

The list will continue to grow in the coming months, but the tournament is already shaping up to showcase a blend of tradition, powerhouse nations, and historic debuts that will expand football’s global map.
