Nearly 24 years after the attacks on the Twin Towers in New York, three more 9/11 victims have been identified.
The remains belong to Ryan Fitzgerald of New York, Barbara Keating of Palm Springs, California, and a woman whose name has not been released.
The identifications were made possible thanks to recent advances in genetic sequencing.
New York’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner was able to extract genetic profiles from remains that had previously tested negative for DNA.

With these new identifications, the number of confirmed victims has risen to 1,653 out of the 2,753 people who died at the World Trade Center.
There are still 1,100 victims whose remains have not been linked to an identity.
Mayor and Medical Examiner Announce Results
The debris from the Twin Towers was recovered and analyzed for years, with limited results until now.
Jason Graham, the city’s chief medical examiner, stated that the commitment to identify victims remains strong.
“Nearly 25 years later, we continue with the same determination,” Graham told local media.
The new mass sequencing technology can analyze remains that were highly degraded by heat, dust, and debris.

This process has made possible identifications that were once considered impossible.
Families of the victims were informed beforehand and offered emotional and psychological support.
For relatives, receiving an identification brings emotional closure after more than two decades of uncertainty.
The identification work is part of a permanent forensic program in memory of the victims.
Conclusion
The announcement comes ahead of another anniversary of the attacks, to be marked on September 11.
The 2001 attack left an indelible mark on the United States and changed the course of global history.
New York City remains committed to honoring every victim.
Each new identification reinforces the promise to never forget what happened that day.
