Accidental vasectomy given to 4-year-old Texas boy

- Vasectomy performed on 4-year-old in Texas hospital.
- Parents accuse doctor of negligence.
- The little one is only four years old.
Doctors at Texas Children’s Hospital mistakenly performed a vasectomy on a four-year-old boy who was undergoing a hernia repair. This has shocked residents of that state since the mistake could cost the entire staff who participated in the surgery dearly. The child’s parents are outraged, according to El universal.
It wasn’t enough that Dr. Susan L. Jarosz, who treated the child, said that it had been an accident, since the procedure has already been performed. This information has shocked the public because it’s incomprehensible how they could have performed an operation that is regularly done on adults who no longer want to have children, on a small child.
HOW DID THE NIGHTMARE BEGIN?

It all started when the child began experiencing inflammation on the right side of his groin. His parents were worried about him and decided to take him to the doctor, where they hoped to take care of the problem. They never imagined their son would receive the wrong surgery.
With the diagnosis confirmed, the doctor proceeded to schedule the surgery for last August 4, 2021. It appeared to have gone smoothly but after the surgery it was discovered that the doctor performed an accidental vasectomy. Now the family is taking legal action against the Texas hospital.
WHAT DOES THE FAMILY WANT?

According to the Miami Herald, the child’s family has already filed a lawsuit against the hospital, writing: «After the operation, the hernia sac was sent to pathology. The pathology report noted tissue from the vas deferens included in the hernia sac specimen: an unintended vasectomy.”
Vasectomy consists of cutting one of the ducts through which the sperm passes. This procedure is very common in adult men who no longer wish to procreate. It is a routine birth control measure and an outpatient operation that lasts approximately half an hour.
WHAT CONSEQUENCES COULD IT HAVE?

According to specialized research, the procedure could have some consequences for the boy, such as infertility. Upon learning of the error, the doctor apologized to the family, however, the parents are not happy at all and are looking for something more than an apology.
The lawsuit they filed against the doctor and the hospital is demanding at least a quarter of a million dollars, which, they say, will be used for any future medical treatment as well as for the trauma.
WHAT DO THE PARENTS ALLEGE?

The child’s family alleges that there was negligence on the part of the doctors by «not correctly placing and separating the hernia sac from the vas deferens before surgically removing it.» According to the Miami Herald, this procedure could cause physical and psychological problems for the child.
“Having what is essentially an involuntary vasectomy at the age of four is an unacceptable outcome when a patient undergoes hernia repair surgery. Furthermore, the emotional and psychological effects of living with this knowledge are unfathomable, first for the parents and then for the child himself,” the plaintiffs said.
