The layoffs were first reported by Crain’s New York, which noted that the action is part of Amazon’s global plan to restructure divisions and flatten management levels.
A company spokesperson confirmed the information in a statement sent to USA TODAY, reiterating that notifications were issued to employees on October 28.
Amazon explained that the measures are not limited to New York but are part of a global restructuring that affects teams in technology development, customer experience, and human resources.
The company had significantly expanded its workforce during the pandemic years, when online shopping reached record levels.
Amazon layoffs aim to boost efficiency

Beth Galetti, Amazon’s Senior Vice President of People Experience and Technology, stated in an internal memo that the cuts are intended to “make the company more agile and efficient.”
“We are convinced that we need to organize in a more agile way, with fewer management layers and greater accountability,” Galetti said.
The layoffs will allow Amazon to focus resources on high-impact strategic areas by merging departments and eliminating duplicate functions.
According to the executive, the adjustments are part of a structural transformation to adapt to an increasingly competitive and fast-changing environment.
Amazon offers compensation and job support
Amazon assured that laid-off employees will receive a 90-day notice, severance pay, a one-time payment to cover medical expenses, and access to retraining and job placement programs.
“In addition, we are offering employment support services to help them find their next opportunity,” the company said.
The transition programs will include personalized career counseling and access to online training platforms as part of post-employment benefits.
The company emphasized that its top priority remains supporting every affected employee during this period of change.
Tech restructuring and global layoff trend
Although the layoffs have raised concern in the tech industry, Amazon is not the only company downsizing.
Firms such as Google, Meta, and Microsoft have also implemented similar workforce reductions in recent months in response to global economic pressures.
Analysts point out that this trend reflects a structural shift across the technology sector.
Through these measures, Amazon seeks to balance future growth with financial sustainability.
