  • Non-citizens banned from voting: will distrust in the U.S. electoral system increase?
  • Is this a strategy by Trump to question the results?
  • What impact will these measures have on immigrants?

Eight U.S. states have proposed amendments to their constitutions to explicitly prohibit non-citizens from voting, despite the fact that this is already illegal in the country.

This measure has sparked controversy, with critics arguing that it is part of a strategy by former President Donald Trump.

He is backed by his Republican allies to challenge the results of the presidential election if he loses again on November 5.

Among the states that will vote on these proposals in November are North Carolina and Wisconsin, two key battlegrounds that could be decisive in the election’s outcome, according to Reuters.

The other six states—Idaho, Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri, Oklahoma, and South Carolina—are considered Republican strongholds.

Proponents of these measures argue that they address voter concerns about the rising number of immigrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border irregularly.

However, political analysts and democracy advocates have pointed out that non-citizen voting in federal elections is already prohibited.

They argue that this new initiative is unnecessary and has little practical effect.

According to several studies cited by Reuters, non-citizen voting is extremely rare and does not pose a real threat to the electoral system.

Trump has maintained this narrative since his defeat in 2020, when he claimed, without evidence, that millions of immigrants voted illegally, leading to a decrease in confidence in the electoral system.

Even in his recent debate against Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, Trump reiterated these accusations, stating that many illegal immigrants are being encouraged to vote.

Currently, only 17 localities in the United States allow legal non-citizens to vote in local elections, including San Francisco and Washington, D.C.
