Last Saturday, in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas, bordering the United States, an armed group kidnapped at least 31 migrants, predominantly Venezuelans, while they were traveling in a truck towards the border.
This incident was confirmed on Tuesday by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
President López Obrador stated, ‘It is understood that a truck carrying 30 or 31 migrants was intercepted, and five were left behind.’
He further mentioned, as quoted by the EFE agency, ‘The others were taken, but the search began immediately from the first moments.’ These remarks were made to the media following his morning conference in the southern state of Tabasco.
AMLO breaks the silence regarding the kidnapping of migrants

President López Obrador has confirmed that the Secretariat of Public and Citizen Security of the federal government is actively investigating the kidnapping case.
However, he emphasized that the identity of the group responsible for the kidnapping and their motives, especially concerning the Hispanic immigrants, remain unclear.
The Mexican president referenced national press reports that the abduction of foreigners took place on Saturday. Furthermore, the incident occurred on the Reynosa-Matamoros highway.
Notably, the governor of Tamaulipas, Américo Villarreal, did not confirm the kidnapping until Monday.

According to reports, the majority of the kidnapped migrants are Venezuelans who had departed from the northern city of Monterrey.
Their destination was Matamoros, situated on the border with Brownsville, Texas, where they were scheduled to attend their humanitarian asylum appointment in the United States.
The incident of migrant kidnapping, particularly in a region already grappling with significant security issues, underscores the critical need to address the complexities of the migration situation.
Additionally, it highlights the necessity for more effective international cooperation to tackle the underlying causes of migration.
What did the authorities indicate?

Jorge Cuéllar, the head of the Executive Secretariat of Public Security in Tamaulipas, recently provided details about the migrant kidnapping incident in an interview with ‘Foro TV’.
He explained that following the kidnapping, the bus was escorted by military personnel to the Matamoros headquarters.
This escort also included members of the National Guard and State Guard to facilitate the necessary investigations, as reported by the EFE agency.
Additionally, the Tamaulipas Security spokesperson announced on social media that five of the 31 kidnapped migrants were found on Monday night.
Where were the migrants found?

According to available information, the migrants were traveling on the Monterrey-Matamoros highway in a vehicle accompanied by two individuals who had previously intercepted their bus.

This incident follows record-high numbers in December of individuals attempting to enter the United States via the Mexico border.
Last month, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) confirmed the arrival of more than 2.2 million migrants from January to November.
