  • A decade living with pain
  • Rare and terminal illness

According to People en Español, Annaliese Holland, 25, has decided to pursue voluntary assisted dying after a life marked by chronic pain and constant hospitalizations.

Her story became public after she shared her experience with an Australian outlet, detailing the severity of her condition.

Since childhood, she experienced extreme symptoms such as constant pain, nausea, and daily vomiting, all without a clear diagnosis.

Over the past decade, her body stopped processing food, and she relied on intravenous nutrition.

A Rare Illness Was Finally Diagnosed

Annaliese Holland’s intestines behaved as if they were blocked, even though no physical obstruction existed.

Neurological damage prevented proper digestion and caused waste to build up in her stomach.

At age 18, she was diagnosed with autoimmune autonomic ganglionopathy, a rare disease that affects vital functions.

By age 22, doctors determined the condition was terminal and would only worsen.

Young Woman Chooses Assisted Death as Her Final Decision

Her deterioration led Annaliese Holland to experience multi-organ failure, and she survived sepsis 25 times.

Prolonged use of strong medications caused severe osteoporosis and fractures in her spine.

She also suffered steroid-induced necrosis, a complication that even damaged her teeth, causing some to fall out.

The young woman describes every day as a battle marked by extreme pain and profound exhaustion.

VAD Approval Brings Emotional Relief

Annaliese told her family she wanted to die “on her own terms” after looking in the mirror during a hospital stay and no longer recognizing herself.

Her parents are enduring the process with deep pain, though her father acknowledges how much his daughter has endured.

After psychological evaluations and meeting all legal requirements, she received approval for voluntary assisted dying (VAD).

She describes this authorization as her “security blanket,” an option that brings her peace and relieves her daily anxiety—an emotional turning point in her assisted dying decision.
