With two months until Trump assumes the presidency of the United States for another four-year term, state and local security forces are preparing to collaborate with ICE.
According to Telemundo Noticias, there is a program called 287(g) that authorizes local authorities to cooperate in enforcing immigration laws.
If Trump follows through with his widely publicized mass deportation plan, this program would provide the local forces with the tools needed to execute it.
Apparently, security authorities in states and cities will be required to cooperate with ICE in detaining undocumented immigrants.
Strengthening the Role of Local Authorities in Trump’s Deportation Plan

The mass deportation plan may begin before January, as indicated by the so-called «Border Czar,» Tom Homan, who said in Texas: “We’re going to put a plan in place and protect this nation.”
The 287(g) program, established in 1996 during Bill Clinton’s administration, grants local and state authorities the power to carry out immigration functions.
These actions are delegated by ICE, allowing an officer detaining a suspect to access the corporation’s database.
Through this database, they can verify the suspect’s immigration status and hold them for up to 48 hours, potentially leading to deportation.
Will Trump’s Deportation Plan Succeed ?

According to ICE reports, as of 2024, 21 state and local police agencies are participating in the program.
Democrats have opposed its implementation, arguing that it creates fear among immigrants and facilitates racial profiling.
Trump’s measure will likely face resistance from state governments seeking to block the program’s operations and the delegation of authority to local security forces.
For now, the mass deportation plan is progressing rapidly, and it is expected that the Republican president will announce an unprecedented move on this issue on his first day in office.
