Elon Musk is essential to NASA launches and keeping the International Space Station operational.
SpaceX manages billions in government contracts.
Seizing it would disrupt the U.S. space program.
This outburst highlights the growing political rift around Big Tech and sets the stage for a new 2024 campaign battlefield.

Donald Trump vs. Elon Musk
“We’ve been saying it from the start, you can’t trust Elon Musk. Steve Bannon got the visas right and now we see his true colors. Like a scorned woman, as soon as he doesn’t get his way he goes for slander, gossip and innuendo. Have some sacred honor.” pic.twitter.com/ugoh5hi52o

Trump and Musk publicly broke ties on Thursday after the entrepreneur criticized the Republican’s fiscal and budget plan currently in the Senate.
Trump responded by threatening to cancel federal contracts with Musk’s companies. The billionaire countered by suggesting he might “dismantle” the Dragon capsules, essential vehicles for transporting cargo and astronauts to the ISS.
Steve Bannon declared: “If Musk pulls a major space program, Trump should sign an executive order today to seize SpaceX.”
Elon Musk, via X, fired back by calling Bannon a “delayed communist.”
Defense analysts note that while the Defense Production Act allows the president to compel companies to prioritize government contracts, full seizure would be unprecedented and face significant legal challenges.
What’s next
Trump has not responded to Bannon’s proposal, but the pressure could push his team to reevaluate SpaceX contracts.
Musk, who holds South African, Canadian, and U.S. citizenship, may face renewed scrutiny over his naturalization; however, immigration experts doubt there is any legal basis for deportation.
In the short term, tensions threaten to delay NASA missions and open the door for competitors like Blue Origin to win contracts.
Meanwhile, the 2024 presidential race heats up with a new front: control over the private aerospace industry.
