Bissell vacuum cleaner recalled due to fire risk

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a warning about a popular Bissell vacuum cleaner.

The recall has affected thousands in the United States and Canada.

The notice warns of a serious risk of fire linked to the overheating of the battery in the vacuums.

The CPSC reported that approximately 142,000 units of the Bissell Multi Reach vacuum cleaner marketed in the United States, along with another 14,600 in Canada, are being recalled.

This recall specifically affects the 1985, 19851 (also known as Multi Auto), 19859, 1985T, 2151, 21512, 21513, 21517, 21518, 21519, 2151A, 2151T, 2151W and 2151V models.

Consumers can identify them by the term “Multi Reach” printed on the handheld vacuum portion of the product.

The model numbers mentioned above are printed on the product classification label behind the dirt tank.

Bissell vacuum cleaner recalled

The main concern lies in the overheating of the lithium-ion battery of these vacuum cleaners, which can trigger the emission of smoke and, in more serious cases, cause fires.

So far, Bissell has received 17 reports of these incidents, including cases where the battery caught fire, causing minor property damage and minor burns on two occasions.

Given this situation, both the company and the CPSC urge owners of these vacuum cleaners to stop using them immediately.

They are urged to contact Bissell for instructions on how to safely drain the battery and get a replacement vacuum cleaner for free.

The products were sold at major retailers including Target, Walmart and Macy’s

It is crucial that recalled vacuum cleaner batteries be disposed of in accordance with local and state laws.

Consumers must follow the procedures established by municipal recycling centers for damaged, defective or recalled lithium batteries.

These defective vacuum cleaners were sold at popular retailers such as Lowe’s, Macy’s, Kohl’s, Target, Walmart and Best Buy.

They were also sold online through Bissell, Amazon, HSN and other online retailers.

Which products are part of the recall?

The vacuum cleaners were sold between August 2016 to December 2022, with prices ranging from $110 to $270.
