U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Friday that authorities had managed to detain the alleged killer of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot on a Utah university campus on Wednesday.

“I believe, with a high degree of certainty, we have him (the suspect) in custody. Everyone did an excellent job. We worked with local police and the governor,” the president said in a live interview on Fox News from New York.

Trump said he was informed just minutes before going on set for the Fox and Friends program and indicated that both the FBI and other security agencies would release more details during the day.

How the Suspect Was Turned In

The president explained that the arrest had been possible thanks to the involvement of the suspect’s own father.

According to his account, people close to the young man convinced him to surrender after the release of images and a video showing a white man wearing a dark hoodie, cap, and sunglasses.

“It was that a father got involved, specifically his father, and said: ‘We have to go’ (to the police). Again, this is subject to change, but you know, facts are facts: we have the person we believe is the person we were looking for. They drove him to the police station, and he’s there,” Trump detailed.

The FBI Search

The investigation began immediately after the attack that took Kirk’s life while he was participating in a debate before some 3,000 people on the Utah Valley University campus in Orem.

The FBI launched a large-scale operation that included the arrest and release of two previous suspects.

To encourage public cooperation, the agency even offered a $100,000 reward for information leading to the attacker’s capture.

“I don’t want to remember Charlie that way. It’s horrible, from what I heard,” he said during the interview, emphasizing the personal impact of the loss.
