Eduardo González-Cruz is accused of having

killed his wife in Texas. Authorities say he beat her to death with a concrete block.

González-Cruz, 30, will face his trial starting Monday, September 28, 2020 in the criminal court of the Hidalgo County, in Edinburg, in southeastern Texas.

The man had a preliminary hearing on Friday, September 25, and prosecutors offered him to plead guilty and receive a 60-year sentence. González-Cruz rejected the offer.

Now González-Cruz bets everything on his trial. The charge he faces is that of murder in the first degree and according to the Texas Penal Code that is punishable by life imprisonment.

However, if the jury decides that you are not guilty or that you do not deserve life in prison, you could receive a lesser sentence and even go free. Everything will be decided in a few days.

The details of the case that are now being told are contained in the legal documents and that are the basis in the trial against González-Cruz.

In the chronicle that you will read below, a case of domestic violence that ended with the murder of a Hispanic woman is unraveled.

On the afternoon of Sunday, September 1, 2017, the emergency number of the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO, for its acronym in English) received the call to go to a house in the town of Peñitas.

According to the transcript of the emergency call, a woman was allegedly being beaten by her partner and screams were heard in the remote home.

Agents arrived at the house marked 39000 Brittney Street in Peñitas, a town surrounded by ranches, and found the body of a woman beaten to death.

When the agents searched the woman, she was already dead lying on the floor covered in her own blood. A concrete block was next to the victim and had several blood stains.

Then the patrolmen called the agents of the Homicide Division to carry out the investigation of the crime. The robbery was ruled out as a motive for the murder because several valuables were in the house.

The investigation then turned to Eduardo González-Cruz, the woman’s partner, they were not married but lived together, and who, despite being Sunday, was not in the place. The agents issued a search warrant although they did not charge him with anything.

Adaly Téllez-Johnson, 30, was killed by several concrete blows that her partner allegedly inflicted on her head. The woman suffered years of abuse.

The woman was identified by authorities as Adaly Téllez-Johnson, 30, and neighbors said she and her partner González-Cruz fought constantly and even described the man as violent.

An agent from the Homicide Division explained that the woman had been «killed with several blows» and it was established that the concrete block had been the deadly weapon since it had several blood stains from the victim.

During the investigation, the agents discovered that a man, who matched Eduardo González-Cruz’s description, had attacked a woman and stolen her purse with credit and debit cards while threatening her with a metal object.

That same Sunday afternoon, the man took money from several ATMs from the woman he robbed and the surveillance cameras of the banks gave the agents images of the thief and who turned out to be the partner of Adaly Téllez-Johnson.

Based on that, the agents then finally issued an arrest warrant against Eduardo González-Cruz as allegedly responsible for the death of his wife, the robbery of another, illegal use of credit cards and kidnapping of the woman he assaulted.

By Monday the morning after the crime, all the Hidalgo County police corporations already had in their patrols the photographs of Eduardo González-Cruz and the description of the bicycle on which he was traveling.

A patrolman from the Pharr Police Department (PPPD) spotted a man on a bicycle down a street who matched the description of the fugitive accused of killing Adaly Téllez-Johnson.

Eduardo González-Cruz was then detained, without incident, by the patrolman who discovered him pedaling «at high speed,» according to his report, through the streets of the city.

During his first interrogation with the agents of the Homicide Division of the HCSO González-Cruz admitted to having killed his wife in a moment of anger during a family dispute.

Almost three years have passed since that homicide and the man awaiting trial in the Hidalgo County jail.

On Friday, September 25, 2020, the prosecutor Roxanna Salinas made the offer to Eduardo González-Cruz to plead guilty and spend 60 years in jail.

Attorneys Lucía Regalado and Héctor Hernández Jr. informed their client of the offer. However, after a brief deliberation the man rejected the agreement. Now he bet all his luck on trial.
