Mexico’s Navy Secretariat confirmed a tragic incident that took place in the port of New York.

During a departure maneuver, the training ship Cuauhtémoc, known as the “Ambassador and Gentleman of the Seas,” collided with the Brooklyn Bridge.

The accident, which occurred as part of the “Bicentennial of the Consolidation of Independence at Sea” training cruise, caused significant damage to the vessel.

As a result of the collision, two crew members lost their lives, and 22 others were injured.

Of the injured, 11 are in serious condition and nine are stable.

The tragic event has deeply affected the Mexican naval community, and the Navy Secretariat has pledged to provide all possible information regarding the situation.

Mexico’s President, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, expressed her condolences on the social media platform X.

She deeply mourned the loss of the two crew members and expressed her solidarity with the affected families.

“We deeply regret the passing of two crew members of the Cuauhtémoc Training Ship. Our solidarity and support go to their families,” she wrote.

Additionally, Sheinbaum thanked New York City Mayor Eric Adams for the support given to those affected, according to Infobae.

The President stated that the Navy Secretariat will continue providing updates on the condition of the injured and the measures being taken to ensure their well-being.

The accident occurred while the ship was maneuvering to depart the port. Authorities confirmed that the damage sustained by the vessel will prevent it from continuing with the scheduled training cruise.

Ongoing Investigation

The Navy Secretariat is currently managing the necessary repairs and implementing appropriate measures to ensure the health and safety of the Cuauhtémoc ship’s crew.

The Mexican Ambassador to the United States and staff from the Mexican Consulate General in New York are working alongside the Navy Secretariat to care for the injured and support the victims’ families.

The director of the Naval Academy and the Commander of the Eighth Naval Region are also in direct contact with the cadets’ families and the Cuauhtémoc ship’s crew, coordinating procedures to reunite affected individuals with their loved ones.

The Navy Secretariat emphasized that it is carrying out all necessary coordination to ensure timely and effective assistance to the victims of the accident.
