The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, revealed on Thursday that the migrants shot and killed by soldiers on Tuesday in Chiapas were primarily from Egypt, El Salvador, and Peru.
She also confirmed that an investigation into the incident is already underway.
“They are from Egypt, El Salvador, and Peru,” the president noted during her morning press conference when questioned about the issue.
This tragic event took place shortly after Sheinbaum began her presidency, and she has vowed to ensure the safety of Mexican citizens.

The Mexican president expressed her sorrow over the event, stating that “it must be investigated and sanctioned.”
She also confirmed that the members of the National Defense Secretariat (Sedena) responsible for shooting the foreigners are already under the custody of the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), which will be handling the investigation.

Sheinbaum addressed the incident, which was reported by Sedena on Wednesday, that occurred on the night of October 1.
The event took place on a stretch of road between Villa Comaltitlán and Huixtla, two municipalities in Chiapas.
How did the incident happen?
According to the information provided, two Mexican Army officers allegedly mistook 33 migrants traveling in two trucks for suspected criminals.
As a result, they opened fire, leaving four dead and 12 injured, two of whom later died after being taken to a hospital.
On Wednesday, the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that one of the deceased was a Peruvian national.
They condemned the incident “strongly.”
What will president Claudia Sheinbaum do about it?
Sheinbaum stated that the Secretary of the Interior, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, and the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Juan Ramón de la Fuente, are in contact with the embassies of the three countries involved.
They are offering support to the families of the victims and coordinating efforts to meet any necessary requirements.
She emphasized that the FGR would conduct the investigation and determine the responsibility of the soldiers who fired the shots and whether anyone else is involved.
“The investigation is ongoing. It’s not just the Military Police conducting the investigation, but also the Attorney General’s Office, and the soldiers have already been placed at their disposal,” she reiterated.
What will happen with the investigation?
President Claudia Sheinbaum stressed that “a situation like this cannot be repeated,” and that measures are being taken to prevent such incidents.
She instructed the Secretary of Defense, General Ricardo Trevilla, to ensure that “this is handled appropriately.”
The incident occurred following the growing role of the Armed Forces in security tasks during the administration of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024).
