Outgoing Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador hands over power to Claudia Sheinbaum on Tuesday in a congressional ceremony marking the country’s first female presidency.
The 62-year-old scientist and former mayor of Mexico City will take on the challenge of governing Mexico for the next six years.

Claudia Sheinbaum takes office
From dawn, several hundred police officers with plastic shields were stationed around Congress in central Mexico City to secure the area during Claudia Sheinbaum’s inauguration.
Metal barriers and fences were placed in some locations.
Groups of pro- and anti-government demonstrators gathered near the Legislative Palace.
There were some scuffles between protesters and police, who pushed them back to block their way.
In a ceremony at Congress, Sheinbaum took the constitutional oath of office, known as the «swearing-in.»
After that, she will receive the presidential sash and deliver a speech to the Mexican people in Mexico City’s Zócalo later in the afternoon.
