Doctors at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Georgia, diagnosed the injuries as non-accidental. The parents tried to defend themselves.
They hired doctors to testify on their behalf. They argued that the baby had hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.
They claimed that the disorder caused the fractures. The Georgia jury was not convinced.
All of the state’s medical witnesses refuted that theory. They testified that abuse was the only explanation for the injuries.
The baby suffered no more fractures after being separated from his parents. The Georgia jury deliberated for several hours.
Finally, they found the Alexanders guilty on 12 of 16 charges. The sentence was 18 months in jail for both.
Additionally, they will have 15 years of probation. They will be allowed to contact their child after being released, according to the Georgia Gazette.
The case has shocked the community. Many wonder how such abuse could have occurred.
