Tragedy at a Hispanic Baby Shower: What Was Meant to Be a Celebration Ended in Terrible Deaths

The family of Joseph “JoJo” Premeaux, 33, says they traveled to Dallas last weekend to celebrate the arrival of a new baby, never imagining they would end up organizing his funeral.

The tragedy occurred during a baby shower that was meant to be a family gathering and instead was marked by a shooting that left people dead and seriously injured, according to ABC 8.

A father and husband who “lit up the room”

Joseph Premeaux was described by his family as a joyful, warm person who was deeply devoted to his loved ones.

“He lit up the room,” said his mother, Diana Premeaux.

“He loved life. He loved his family. He loved his children and his wife,” she added.

His wife, Valerie Flores Premeaux, remembered him as the pillar of the household and a constant presence for his children.

“He was a husband, he was a father. He was the provider, the protector—just a good guy,” she said.

“He was very funny. He was affectionate. He loved us. He loved his family. And he gave himself to anyone. He was just a good person,” she added.

The family says Joseph Premeaux leaves behind three children, the youngest only eight years old. They are now asking for help with funeral expenses through a GoFundMe account.

“The hardest part is that I don’t even know how to tell him,” Flores said. “Because he is autistic, he won’t understand that his dad is gone.”

According to family accounts, around 50 people were inside the venue when the shooting began.

Among those present were children and pregnant women.

“No one deserves that at a baby shower,” said Reana Martínez, Premeaux’s sister. “My brother and my cousin are on the ground,” she recalled.

“My niece was also shot in the ankle,” she added. Martínez described her brother as her “superman.”

“He was an exceptional man. He took care of everyone around him,” she said. “He was a great joker. Always smiling. He walked into a room and lit it up.”

The family confirmed that one of Premeaux’s cousins was seriously injured and is currently fighting for his life in the hospital following the Dallas baby shower shooting.

Arrest and call for support for the victims

According to the Dallas Police Department, Jesús Torres, 21, was arrested on December 6 in connection with the shooting.

Authorities reported that Torres was first taken to a hospital to receive medical treatment.

He was later booked into the Dallas County Jail.

He has been formally charged with murder.

In addition to the legal process, relatives have turned to GoFundMe to request financial support for another victim of the attack.

“My brother, a loving husband, father, and the main provider for his family, has been the victim of a senseless act of gun violence,” the message reads.

“He is currently fighting for his life in the ICU,” they added.

The text also recalls the loss of Joseph Premeaux during what was supposed to be a family celebration.

“We humbly ask for any donation to support my brother on this long and difficult journey,” the family states.
