The severe weather continues in the U.S.! The central and eastern United States were hit by a series of severe storms on Wednesday, causing devastation and tragedy.

A young child lost his life, and his mother was seriously injured when a tree fell on their home in Livonia, Michigan.

This event is part of an extreme weather pattern that also includes a sweltering heatwave in California’s Central Valley, and western and southern Texas.

According to FOX 2 reports, a violent storm in Livonia caused a huge tree to fall on a residence, killing a 2-year-old child and leaving his mother in critical condition.

The tragedy occurred on Wednesday afternoon when the Livonia Fire Department received an emergency call at 3:37 p.m.

The uprooted tree landed in the bedroom of the house, where the mother and her child were resting on the bed.

Fire Chief Robert Jennison described the rescue effort as a monumental challenge, requiring about a dozen chainsaws and the involvement of 25 firefighters.

«All available units in the city were sent to the scene,» Jennison told FOX 2.

How did the authorities respond?

«A special call was made to the Western Wayne County Search and Rescue team,» the fire chief announced.

«And the teams worked tirelessly for more than an hour, removing parts of the tree and lifting it with high-pressure air bags to extract the victims,» he reported.

A two-week-old baby, who was in a crib in a separate room, was unharmed but was taken along with his grandmother to St. Mary’s Hospital as a precaution.

The deadly storms left a swath of destruction in the Newburgh and Schoolcraft area, with residents reporting strong winds that lasted about 20 minutes and knocked down dozens of large trees.

Will the extreme weather continue in Detroit?

While the central and eastern United States were facing these destructive storms, other parts of the country were not spared from extreme weather conditions.

Although the presence of a tornado has not yet been officially confirmed, the National Weather Service (NWS) is investigating the incident.

They aim to determine the exact cause of the strong winds and subsequent damage, the NWS reported.

Meteorological experts continue to monitor conditions to provide further updates and warnings.
