Heavy rains in Roswell, New Mexico, have caused severe flooding that has claimed the lives of at least two people and forced the rescue of hundreds of residents.

According to the New Mexico National Guard, 290 people have been rescued, with 38 of them transported to local hospitals.

Miguel Aguilar, the adjutant general of the National Guard, noted that authorities were already prepared.

This readiness was partly due to their experience with previous floods in the region, such as those in Ruidoso.

According to EFE, authorities are using tactical vehicles to evacuate those living in the hardest-hit areas.

Some individuals had to be rescued from the tops of their vehicles, which were submerged in water, or were swept away by the current into the Spring River, which overflowed.

Authorities have also closed the Roswell Air Center.

Additionally, all scheduled flights for Sunday and Monday have been canceled, along with the closure of other facilities such as the museum, zoo, and cemetery.

The National Weather Service has warned of potential additional storms with the risk of hail, strong winds, and even tornadoes.

This comes as the region continues to recover from a record-breaking level of rainfall.
