Dozens of Latin American and Caribbean migrants deported from the United States to Mexico have begun crossing the Nicaraguan border.

This is part of their journey back to their home countries or an attempt to settle in Costa Rica or Colombia for work.

According to Radio ABC Stereo, most of these migrants are Venezuelan, but there are also Colombians, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Peruvians among them.

All of them have crossed the Las Manos border checkpoint, located between Honduras and Nicaragua.

This movement follows recent changes in immigration policy implemented by President Donald Trump’s administration.

Venezuelan national Gustavo Enrique Gallardo told the radio station that he entered the United States on December 20, 2024. However, after attending his immigration appointment, he was detained for 45 days and then deported to Mexico.

«We are heading to Venezuela. They say (in the U.S.) that we are criminals, but we are family men.»

«I was held in prison for a month and a half and was released fifteen days ago,» said Gallardo, a native of Maracaibo.

Reactions from Some Migrants

A similar situation was experienced by his compatriot Joel Martínez, who was detained for a month before being sent back to Mexico.

Another Venezuelan family—Milagros Rodríguez, her husband, and their three children—shared that they were denied immigration appointments.

Once their permit expired, they were deported, according to EFE.

Now, these deported migrants return to Nicaragua on their way back home.

Some migrants have expressed their intention to stay in Costa Rica or Colombia, seeking employment and saving money in hopes of eventually returning to their home countries.

The Las Manos border checkpoint, located in the municipality of Dipilto, Nueva Segovia department, is one of the three crossing points between Honduras and Nicaragua.

It is situated 255 kilometers north of Managua and serves as a key route for migrants traveling through Central America.
