The Trump administration has officially announced the cancellation of 83% of USAID programs.
This, according to Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Monday.
«The 5,200 canceled contracts cost tens of billions of dollars on initiatives that failed—or in some cases even harmed—US national interests,» Rubio stated on social media.
Following a six-week review, the administration decided to permanently eliminate these programs, citing inefficiencies and unnecessary spending.

The US government is currently in talks with Congress to transfer the remaining 1,000 USAID contracts to the State Department for more effective management.
Rubio credited the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, along with the State Department, for implementing this historic reform.
However, Musk’s growing influence within the Trump administration has sparked concern among some government officials.
This, according to a report by The New York Times.
Global Impact and Controversy
Since Trump took office in January, the US suspended foreign aid for 90 days to review program expenditures, affecting funding for hundreds of NGOs worldwide.
Additionally, by Musk’s directive, USAID—the world’s largest international aid agency—was dismantled.
The move has sparked widespread criticism and intense debate, including a heated discussion between Musk and Rubio during a meeting with Trump last week, as reported by The New York Times.
While some view the restructuring as a measure to improve government efficiency, others argue that it delivers a severe blow to US-funded humanitarian programs.
