U.S. President-elect Donald Trump pledged on Monday that all goods from Mexico and Canada would face a 25% tariff in retaliation for drug trafficking and illegal immigration.

He also proposed a 10% tariff on Chinese products until the country stops the flow of fentanyl into the U.S.

In a post on his platform Truth Social, Trump stated that one of his first executive orders after taking office on January 20 will be to sign the necessary documents to impose a 25% tariff on goods from Mexico and Canada.

The tariff would apply to all products entering the U.S. from these countries.

This tariff will remain in effect until what Trump described as “the invasion” of drugs and undocumented immigrants is stopped.

“Both Mexico and Canada have the absolute right and power to easily solve this long-standing problem,” Donald Trump stated.

“We demand that they use this power, and until they do, it’s time for them to pay a very high price!” he added.

On Truth Social, Trump also mentioned having had “many conversations” with China about the vast amounts of drugs, particularly fentanyl, being sent to the U.S.

What Does This Mean for Mexico?

“It has been in vain. Representatives from China told me they would enforce their maximum penalty—death—for any drug trafficker caught doing this,” he stated.

“But unfortunately, they never followed through, and the drugs are entering our country, primarily through Mexico, at levels never seen before,” Trump added.

As a result, he announced that until this flow stops, he will impose an additional 10% tariff on Chinese products.

This will be on top of any existing tariffs on all products entering the U.S. from China.

What Is Donald Trump Trying to Achieve?

As a candidate, the New York magnate emphasized his intention to save American jobs by imposing tariffs of up to 20%.

These tariffs would target all imported products, with a 60% tariff specifically for goods from China, as part of an effort to intensify the trade war with the country.

Trump’s primary focus is the automotive industry. He has threatened tariffs of up to 200% on all cars coming from Mexico to discourage Chinese manufacturers from establishing operations there.
