The SMN urged the public to stay informed through official channels and follow civil protection guidelines in case of any eventuality.
The seismic event adds to the series of earthquakes that have affected various regions of Mexico in recent weeks, reminding the population of the importance of being prepared for any seismic emergency.
For now, the situation remains under control, and authorities will continue to provide updates on any developments related to this quake.
What to Do During an Earthquake
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend that when an earthquake begins, people should drop to their knees on the ground.
This will prevent them from being knocked over by the shaking and allow them to crawl if necessary.
Once down, they should seek cover under a sturdy piece of furniture such as a table.
They should also cover their head and neck to prevent injuries that could cause lasting harm or hinder their ability to reach a safe place where they can receive help. This was also recommended during the Chiapas earthquake.
Due to the magnitude of the quake in Chiapas, dozens of people were evacuated from buildings in Guatemala City, where seismic alarms were also activated.
Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo urged the population to “remain calm” and “follow evacuation protocols.”
“Our teams are already assessing the effects of these tremors,” the president said on social media platform X.
