According to USA TODAY, the Jeffrey Epstein case once again shook the U.S. political landscape following the release of a long-awaited Department of Justice report on July 7.

Far from providing explosive new revelations, the memorandum confirmed that there is no “client list” linked to the financier, nor any evidence suggesting his 2019 death was anything other than a suicide.

For the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement, the news was a cold shower, derailing years of speculation and conspiracy theories about sex trafficking networks protected by the elites.

For a long time, allies and supporters of Donald Trump kept the idea of a global cover-up alive, fueling the ideological cohesion of the conservative base with promises to reveal scandalous secrets.

Internal Division Rocks MAGA

Even Trump, during his 2024 re-election campaign, pledged to declassify all information related to the Epstein case, raising expectations of exposing powerful figures from both parties.

But the Department of Justice’s official conclusion enraged influential voices within the MAGA movement, who saw the report as a betrayal of campaign promises and a strategic setback in an election year.

Activist Laura Loomer lashed out at former Attorney General Pam Bondi, accusing her of disappointing Trump’s most loyal voters and diminishing the stature of President Trump and his running mate, JD Vance.

On her X account, Loomer warned on July 11 that MAGA supporters’ patience is running thin, revealing an internal fracture that threatens to erode the discipline of the movement.

Trump’s strategist and key MAGA figure, Steve Bannon, was even more alarmist in his assessment, warning on July 12 during the Turning Point USA Student Action Summit about potentially significant electoral consequences.

According to Bannon, outrage over how the Epstein case has been handled could cost the movement up to 10% of its electorate, jeopardizing the Republican majority in the House of Representatives and even the presidency itself.

His message was clear: the issue is not merely a media headache but a real and quantifiable risk to Republican ambitions in 2024 and beyond.

While the right grappled with this internal turmoil, Democrats seized the opportunity to ramp up pressure and expose Republican contradictions.

Trump Seeks Unity Within His Base

Democratic Representative Marc Veasey of Texas announced on July 14 a resolution demanding the full release of all files related to the Epstein case, aiming to force an uncomfortable debate among the opposition.

Veasey wasted no time directly attacking Trump, accusing him of having used the expectations surrounding the case for years to mobilize his base and publicly challenging him to fulfill his promise of total declassification.

In his July 13 post on X, Veasey summed up the Republican dilemma with an ultimatum: “Put up or shut up.” He pointed to the MAGA split as a political boomerang for Trump.

Meanwhile, Ro Khanna, Democrat from California, introduced an amendment in an unrelated bill seeking to force the publication of Epstein’s documents, adding more legislative pressure.

The Epstein Case as an Open Wound

While these initiatives have little chance of advancing in a Republican-controlled House of Representatives, they succeed in keeping the topic alive and exposing tensions within the conservative movement.

The Republican Party thus faces a dilemma: support full publication to appease its most demanding base or align with Trump’s strategy of closing the matter to avoid further campaign damage.

In this context, Trump tried to contain the internal crisis with a message of unity directed at his supporters on July 12, in which he urged everyone to “stay on the same team” and criticized those who, in his words, were seeking to harm his campaign “all over a guy who never dies, Jeffrey Epstein.”

The Department of Justice’s report seems to have closed the door, at least officially, on any new explosive revelations.
