Authorities in Mississippi confirmed the capture of Drew Johnson, a 33-year-old convicted murderer.
He escaped from the South Mississippi Correctional Institution (SMCI) on Tuesday afternoon.
The prison is located near the city of Leakesville, and his escape triggered an intense manhunt that ended on Wednesday with his recapture in a nearby area to the SMCI.
The Mississippi Department of Corrections warned the public about Johnson’s high level of danger.

In a statement issued by the George County Sheriff’s Office on Facebook, the public was urged to take precautions:
«He will be desperate and very dangerous. Call your family and let them know. Send them messages and get responses.»

Johnson was convicted in February 2022 in Rankin County, Mississippi, for homicide/murder and sentenced to life in prison.
Drew Johnson Has a History of Violent Crimes
His escape put nearby communities on high alert, especially during the Christmas holidays.
Johnson’s criminal history is extensive and alarming.
According to the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office in Tennessee, before his trial in Mississippi, he pleaded guilty to several crimes in Tennessee.
These included the 2016 stabbing murder of a man whose body was found in Memphis.

Additionally, Drew Johnson was responsible for the attempted murder of a fellow inmate while incarcerated at the Shelby County Jail.
These prior crimes highlight Johnson’s danger and the level of threat he posed during his brief time on the run.
The quick response from law enforcement allowed for his capture before he could commit further crimes.
However, the escape raises questions about the security measures at SMCI and how easily Johnson managed to escape, CBS News reported.
