Extraordinary meeting and joint condemnation
Five European member states of the UN Security Council —the United Kingdom, France, Denmark, Greece, and Slovenia— on Sunday urged Israel to reverse its plan to occupy Gaza City, arguing it would violate international law.
The request came during an extraordinary session convened to discuss the expansion of Israeli military operations in the Palestinian enclave.
This was reported by EFE.

In a joint statement read by Slovenia’s representative, Samuel Zbogar, the countries condemned Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to extend the military offensive.
The statement warned that any attempt to annex or expand the occupation in Gaza violates international humanitarian law and will not contribute to the release of hostages.
They also cautioned that the measure will increase risks to the lives of Palestinian civilians.
And to the hostages still held by Hamas.

The European representatives stressed that the situation in Gaza is already catastrophic, and a full occupation would worsen the humanitarian crisis.
According to their statement, the offensive could cause more deaths and a massive displacement of people, in a context where famine is so severe that many civilians risk their lives at aid distribution points.
They called on Israel to lift restrictions preventing humanitarian aid from entering and to allow the UN to coordinate with local partners to ensure the safe delivery of food and medicine.
“We have a clear message for Israel: lift your restrictions on aid distribution,” they said, emphasizing that international law requires the protection of civilians even in armed conflict.
Netanyahu reaffirms offensive plan
While the meeting in New York was underway, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a press conference in Jerusalem where he confirmed that Israel will “very soon” launch its offensive against Gaza City and refugee camps in the central and southern parts of the Strip.
According to the Israeli government, these areas are Hamas’ last strongholds.
The announcement comes in a context marked by more than nine months of war, following the October 7, 2023 attack in which, according to Israeli authorities, Hamas killed around 1,200 people.
Meanwhile, Palestinian Ambassador to the UN Riyad Mansour said that since then, Israeli military operations have killed more than 60,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children.
The diplomatic and military confrontation shows no clear signs of an immediate ceasefire, as the international community steps up calls to avoid further escalation.
