The city of Lucknow, in northern India, has been shaken by the suicide of a man who broadcast live his desperation over being unable to afford the insulin his daughter needed to treat her diabetes.

Shahzeb Shakeel, 36, recorded a Facebook Live video in which he tearfully shared his financial crisis and his fear of being unable to cover his child’s vital medical treatment.

During the broadcast, he pleaded for help from businesspeople and acquaintances to raise funds. But shortly after ending the livestream, he picked up a firearm and shot himself in his office.

The case has caused widespread shock in the local community and reignited debate over the lack of access to essential medicines for millions of families in India.

Shakeel, who worked in real estate, was reportedly burdened by debts estimated at over 15 million rupees (around three million Mexican pesos).

During his video, he admitted being under immense pressure from a business partner demanding repayment, worsening his anxiety and sense of hopelessness.

The man pleaded for help to buy the insulin his daughter needed on a chronic basis, explaining he could no longer manage even basic medical costs.

Through sobs, he appealed to prominent figures and businesspeople to help his family survive the overwhelming crisis crushing him.

Failed Rescue Attempts

Some of Shahzeb Shakeel’s relatives saw the livestream in real time and immediately called the police in an attempt to prevent the tragedy.

By the time officers and paramedics arrived at the office, they found the businessman dead at his desk from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The firearm he used, according to initial investigations, was registered under the name of the office security guard.

According to El Heraldo de México, his body was taken to a public hospital for autopsy while forensic teams collected evidence from the scene.

Official Investigation Underway

Officer Prabhatesh Srivastava from Gudamba Police Station confirmed to local media that a formal investigation had been opened.

Authorities said they would review Shakeel’s business financial records to clarify the origin of his debts.

They will also examine the loans mentioned in his video to determine whether there were undue pressures or abusive practices from creditors.

The case has highlighted the human dimension of financial crises faced by thousands of families who often have no support networks or sufficient access to healthcare services.

Similar Tragedies to That of Shahzeb Shakeel in the Region

The high cost of treatment for chronic conditions like diabetes is a harsh reality for millions of families in India, where healthcare coverage is often fragmented or inadequate.

Shakeel’s story is not an isolated incident. Just last month, another family in Lucknow suffered a similar tragedy.

A textile merchant took his own life along with his wife and youngest daughter, overwhelmed by debts they could not repay.

In that case, the daughter managed to alert a relative, but despite rescue attempts, all three died shortly afterward.

Calls for Prevention and Support

Social organizations and experts have urgently called for more effective policies to address over-indebtedness and ensure affordable access to essential medicines for everyone.

They warn that mental health also needs to be a priority, as financial pressures and personal distress can trigger fatal decisions.

Shakeel’s suicide, widely shared on social media, has shocked public opinion by exposing the raw pain of a father desperate to save his daughter.

Local authorities urged the public to seek professional help in times of crisis and stressed the importance of suicide prevention, El Heraldo de México reported.
