According to reports from ABC7 Chicago, thousands of widely used consumer products are being recalled across the United States due to possible exposure to rodent waste, health authorities said.

The recall includes food, medications, medical devices, cosmetics, and pet products that were distributed in at least three states.

Among the affected items are well-known brands such as Cheerios, Pringles, Jolly Ranchers, Skittles, Sour Patch Kids, Gatorade, Coca-Cola, and Heinz Ketchup.

Authorities indicated that some of these products were sold in Indiana, as well as Minnesota and North Dakota.

The recall covers thousands of items distributed by Gold Star Distribution.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, the company’s distribution center in Minneapolis was operating under conditions deemed unsanitary.

Officials reported that products may have come into contact with rodent droppings and urine.

The presence of bird waste inside the facility was also documented.

In addition to food intended for human consumption, the FDA recall includes pet food products.

Non-food items are also affected, including medications and medical devices.

Even products such as Pepto-Bismol and Gillette razors are part of the recall.

The scope of the action reflects the wide range of merchandise handled at the distribution center flagged by the FDA.

Health Risks and Recall Classification

Gold Star Distribution initiated the recall in December.

However, the FDA recently reclassified the recall as one that could cause adverse health consequences.

According to authorities, potential exposure to rodent waste poses health risks.

Among the illnesses mentioned is salmonella.

The FDA clarified that, so far, no illnesses linked to the recalled products have been reported.

Even so, the agency decided to maintain the recall classification due to the potential risk.

Unsanitary conditions identified at the Minneapolis facility were the determining factor for federal intervention.

The FDA did not specify how long the products may have been exposed to these conditions.

Nor did it detail the exact number of units distributed per state.

What Consumers Should Do

The company reported that the recalled products were sold in Indiana, Minnesota, and North Dakota.

Authorities recommended that consumers who purchased any of the affected items should not consume or use them.

The products should be discarded immediately.

No instructions were issued regarding refunds or replacements.

The FDA reiterated that the recall is preventive, despite the absence of reported illnesses.

The recall includes everyday kitchen staples, processed foods, and personal care items.

Authorities have not said whether the distribution center has resumed operations.

They also did not indicate whether additional penalties will be imposed on the company.

The case highlights the importance of sanitary controls within mass consumer distribution chains.

The FDA stated it will continue monitoring compliance with health and safety regulations.

Consumers in affected states were urged to carefully review purchased products.

The agency emphasized that food and product safety remains a top priority.

The recall remains in effect while inspections and reviews continue.

Authorities did not rule out further updates as the investigation progresses.
