According to USA Today, the 6-year-old girl was last seen in the Flint River in Michigan on the afternoon of Wednesday, May 1.

The Genesee County Sheriff confirmed that there were two consecutive drownings within 24 hours.

«We had back to back child drownings within 24 hours on the same river, two different parts of the city and both of them are fatalitiess,» stated Chris Swanson.

The 7-year-old boy who drowned the day before had special needs.

The search to recover the little girl’s body is ongoing

When authorities last saw the girl, she was being swept away by the current in the Flint River. It is now considered a recovery effort rather than a rescue.

According to USA Today, between 75 and 100 staff and volunteers have been deployed each day.

«We have a dive team group that is made up of southeastern Michigan counties,» Chris Swanson said, adding that they are equipped with the best available technology.

The sheriff said in a video posted on Facebook that the problem with this river is that it is very dangerous and filled with hazards.
