Great ShakeOut: Earthquake Safety in California 2024

This Thursday, millions of people in California will participate in the Great California ShakeOut, a day dedicated to practicing earthquake safety.

Over 10.5 million people have registered to participate in the ShakeOut in California.

Globally, more than 57.7 million people are expected to join the International ShakeOut Day.

The 2024 California ShakeOut will take place on Thursday, October 17, at 10:17 a.m.

How to Participate in the Great ShakeOut 2024 and Register Online

This event gives individuals, businesses, and schools in California the chance to practice what to do in case of an earthquake.

To participate, you can register online and join the millions of others who will do so.

The registration form asks for your location, email, and other basic information.

Businesses, schools, and government agencies can find more details online about how to get involved.

Earthquake safety recommendations include dropping to your hands and knees, a position that reduces the risk of being knocked over.

It is also advised to cover your head and neck with one hand and take shelter under a sturdy table or desk.

If no furniture is available, it is best to stay near an interior wall and remain crouched to protect vital organs.

You should hold onto something stable until the shaking stops, or, if not possible, cover your head with both hands.

People using a cane should follow the same rules or sit down and cover their head, keeping the cane nearby.

Those in wheelchairs should lock the wheels if possible and protect themselves with their arms.

In regards to earthquake safety, authorities warn against taking shelter in doorways or running outside during an earthquake.

They also debunk the «triangle of life» theory, stating that it is based on dangerous assumptions.
