  • Here are the details.

Harvard University has changed the name of its Department of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) amid increasing pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump, who froze part of its federal funding.

Harvard’s former diversity department will now be called the “Office of Community and Campus Life,” according to a statement sent to students and staff at the institution.

Sherri Ann Charleston, director of the former DEI office, explained that this change aims to “foster a community that embraces difference” while respecting the law prohibiting universities from making decisions based on race.

Charleston cited Harvard’s interim president, Alan Garber, noting that the institution should value “the unique experiences and contributions of each individual” instead of focusing on broad demographic groups.

The decision comes after the Trump administration froze $2.2 billion in federal funds allocated to Harvard, accusing the university of failing to meet requirements related to diversity and the ideological orientation of foreign students.

The first court hearing in this case is scheduled for July 21 in a Boston court.

Additionally, Charleston announced that Harvard will no longer fund cultural graduation events for students from various ethnic communities.

This is another requirement imposed by the Department of Education under the threat of further budget cuts.

The Conflict with the White House

Harvard is one of the main institutions affected by the actions of the «Federal Task Force to Combat Antisemitism,» created by Trump.

This task force has criticized university affirmative action policies and has demanded greater “diversity of ideas” on campuses.

This change marks a significant shift in the internal policy of one of the world’s most prestigious universities.

Harvard seeks to adapt to new political and legal pressures while attempting to uphold its commitment to inclusion and diversity.
