A heartbreaking tragedy shook New York City on Thursday, when a tourist helicopter crashed into the Hudson River, killing six people.

Among the victims were three children, who were traveling with two adults and the pilot, all aboard a helicopter chartered from the company New York Helicopters, according to Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, speaking to ABC News.

The crash occurred at 3:17 p.m. off the coast of River Drive in Hoboken, New Jersey, shortly after the helicopter took off from the Wall Street heliport.

The aircraft, a Bell 206, made it as far as the George Washington Bridge before losing control and plunging into the water.

Footage of the incident shows the helicopter falling without its tail rotor or one of its main blades, crashing upside down into the freezing river water, which was just 10°C at the time.

Witnesses, like Dani Horbiak, described seeing the aircraft “fall from the sky” from their windows, unable to do anything to stop the tragedy.

The Spanish tourists were rushed to Jersey City Medical Center, but medical efforts were ultimately unsuccessful.

“The hospital did everything it could,” stated Mayor Fulop, visibly affected.

The Spanish Consulate in New York confirmed it is in contact with local authorities to identify the victims and provide support to their families.

Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs is also involved in monitoring the case, according to its communications team.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) identified the helicopter involved in the accident and reported that it was on its sixth flight of the day.

Fulop, who noted that the investigation is being led by the Jersey City Police Department, recalled that concerns had already been raised about air traffic in that area.
