Hunter Biden agrees to private deposition with lawmakers

In a surprising turn, Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, has struck a deal with Republican lawmakers.

He has agreed to answer questions from the House Oversight and Judiciary committees, on February 28, in relation to the impeachment investigation for alleged influence peddling involving his father.

Hunter’s decision comes after proceedings were launched last week to hold him in contempt of Congress.

This was due to his refusal to comply with a subpoena that had been issued in December.

Hunter Biden will testify before lawmakers

In a joint statement, the chairmen of the House Judiciary and Oversight committees, Jim Jordan and James Comer, explained the agreement.

They detailed that Hunter Biden will testify after other members of the Biden family and his associates also testify.

Another of those summoned is James Biden, the president’s brother, with whom details are still being coordinated.

The son of the U.S. president was summoned to testify behind closed doors on December 13, according to EFE.

Hunter Biden was threatened with contempt

Instead of appearing privately before the committees, he only offered a statement to reporters in front of the Capitol, arguing that he would not participate in an «illegitimate investigation.»

After disobeying the subpoena, Republicans approved a contempt of Congress resolution last week in the House Judiciary and Oversight committees.

According to XEVA Noticias, this could lead to criminal charges.

The Republicans had intended to present the contempt resolution to the House this week.

What happens next?

The contempt resolution is now on hold as Hunter Biden has agreed to testify before the committees.

Comer and Jordan, both Republican leaders, warned that they will not tolerate “additional maneuvering or delays by Hunter Biden.”

Now, he is in the crosshairs of the Republican majority in the House as part of the impeachment investigation against his father, Joe Biden.

This is based on alleged influence peddling for the benefit of family members in international businesses, the EFE agency noted.

The Republican investigation and accusations

Republicans allege that the Biden family, especially Hunter, received more than $15 million from foreign companies and governments between 2014 and 2019.

They allege the payments were from Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Romania and China.

In addition, they point out that Hunter’s partners received another additional $9 million, which is why the investigation was initiated.

Parallel to the investigation in Congress, Hunter Biden faces two criminal cases: one for tax fraud in California and another for illegal purchase of weapons in Delaware.
