Yellowstone National Park has announced the temporary closure of Biscuit Basin, a popular tourist destination, due to a hydrothermal explosion.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, July 23, at around 10 AM.

The explosion was recorded near Sapphire Pool, north of the famous Old Faithful geyser.

Park authorities have informed that Biscuit Basin, including the parking area and boardwalks, is temporarily closed for safety reasons.

Fortunately, no injuries have been reported, but the boardwalk leading to the area was severely damaged.

According to a statement from the USGS, the explosion may have originated near Black Diamond Pool.

«Hydrothermal explosions occur when water suddenly turns to steam underground and are relatively common in Yellowstone,» the US Geological Survey added in the message.

The Grand Loop Road, a key route for park visitors, remains open.

In their statement, Yellowstone authorities clarified that there are no other monitoring data indicating changes in the park region.

The explosion does not reflect a change in the underlying volcanic system, which continues to show normal levels of activity, according to the park’s statement.

Additionally, they have assured that this is an evolving incident, and more details will be shared as they become available.
